Before our awesome session together, there are a few things we need to take care of. First up, you'll receive a session agreement and an invoice. I do require a 50% non-refundable retainer that you'll need to settle as soon as possible to secure your date and time. The remaining 50% and is due no later than 24 hours before our session. And don't worry, I've got a session agreement in place too. It just ensures that we're all on the same page about how things work, including timelines, copyright, rescheduling, and even a model release in case I'd love to share some of your fantastic images online. But hey, if you'd prefer to keep things private, no problem at all. Just let me know, and I'll respect your wishes.
Now, let's talk about the day of our session. We'll meet up at our pre-arranged location. If you happen to be running a bit late or stuck in traffic, just shoot me a text and keep me in the loop. Once we're there, I'll show you around and give you the lowdown on where we'll be shooting. Trust me, I'll do my absolute best to make the session super fun and relaxing for everyone! No forced smiles or stiff poses, I promise. Just come ready to explore, get close, connect, and engage with one another. I want to capture those beautiful, natural moments that truly represent your amazing family.
After our session, I'll head home and spend some quality time choosing the best photos that tell your unique story. Once they're ready, you'll receive an online viewing gallery with proof edits. These are the base edits that I'll be working on. It usually takes around 2 weeks to complete. From there, you get to pick your favorite images included in your session fee. And hey, if you're interested, additional images and prints are available too. Once you've made your selections, I'll finalize the edits and send them your way.Once you've got your digital files, you're free to print them, share them on social media, or use them to create awesome holiday cards. The possibilities are endless! The only thing I kindly ask is to refrain from reselling your photos or using them for commercial purposes. You're free to enjoy them personally, but let's just avoid using them for business ventures or contests.

Let's talk fashion for your portrait session, because what you wear plays a BIG role in the final images. Now, I know it might seem like a lot of information, but trust me, it's worth reading through to get a great understanding of what will make you look fabulous.

Dress for the Location:
The best place to start when choosing outfits is the location of your session. What you wear should feel right for where we’ll be. A beach session is usually relaxed and casual, so go with fabrics that breathe well and clothes you’re comfortable moving in, even if they get a bit sandy. For a forest or wooded area, think about comfort and mobility. Layers work well if it’s cool or shaded, and sturdy shoes are helpful for walking on uneven ground. If we’re in a more urban or downtown space, outfits can lean a little more styled or structured, as long as they still feel like you.
The season matters too. In summer, choose light and breathable fabrics to stay comfortable. In fall or spring, layers are key since the weather can change quickly. In winter, staying warm is the priority. Don’t be afraid to wear coats or scarves that match your style. Outerwear can absolutely be part of the look. Whatever the setting, your clothes should help you feel good and move easily so you can enjoy the session and focus on the moments that matter.
Be Comfortable, Be You
The most important thing is that you feel like yourself. You don’t need to dress up or fit into a certain look. Whether you’re showing up with your kids, your partner, your pet, your chosen family, or anyone else, the goal is to feel relaxed and confident. If your clothes feel good, that comfort comes through in your photos. Pick outfits that let you move, play, cuddle, or explore without stress.
Coordinating, Not Matching
You don’t have to match, and actually, it’s better if you don’t. Instead, choose a general colour palette that works well together and let each person add their own spin. Soft neutrals, warm earth tones, pastels, or rich colours all work as long as they flow together. Avoid making everyone wear the same thing. Coordinated but not identical always looks more natural.
Patterns and Prints
Patterns are totally welcome, just use them in moderation. Try having one or two people wear a subtle pattern and let the others wear solids that complement those colours. This keeps the overall look balanced without being too busy. Choose patterns that feel timeless and reflect your personality.
Layers and Texture
Layering different textures and fabrics can help add depth and interest to your photos. Think sweaters, denim, soft knits, or linen. Layers not only look great, but they’re also practical for weather changes and give you the option to adjust your outfit during the session.
Avoid Logos and Graphics
To keep the focus on your connection, it’s best to avoid clothing with large logos, cartoon characters, or bold graphics. These can pull attention away from what matters most and may date the images over time. Simple, classic pieces usually photograph best.
The Little Things Help
A few small details can make a big difference. Clothes that fit well, brushed hair, clean nails, and tidy shoes help you feel more put together without being overdone. Nothing needs to be fancy. Just aim for comfortable and clean so you can focus on being present and enjoying the moment.

DO pick a pattern item and match your family to it
DO add layers and vests and cardigans
DO use a color palette of 3 or more soft/neutral colors to work with
DO go classic and pick clothes that will last through the ages
DO come comfortable
DO wear flowy shirts, skirts, and dresses
DO wear shoes that are timeless and plain

DON’T wear bulky watches and jewelry
DON’T wear bright, bold, or neon colors
DON’T match everyone perfectly or wear jeans and white t-shirts; you want variety
DON’T pick busy patterns or stripes because they look funny from a camera’s perspective
DON’T wear clothing with media, logos, or words.
DON’T wear tinted glasses

When it comes to hair, feel free to go with your usual style.
If you've been eyeing that fresh haircut and it makes you feel excited, go ahead and treat yourself to a snip! Just make sure to schedule it about a week or so before the session to allow your hair to settle into its new look.
Now, if you prefer to keep your hair as is, that's totally cool too! The most important thing is for you to feel comfortable and confident in your appearance. I want everyone to look and feel their best while keeping it laid-back and easygoing. So, whether you're rocking your signature style or trying something fresh, let your true selves shine through in the photos.
If you're someone who loves to rock a full face of makeup every day, go ahead and bring your A-game! Feel free to showcase your signature style and bring on the glam. We want you to feel like your most confident self, and if that means going all out with a bold and fabulous look, go for it!
On the other hand, if you prefer a more natural look and don't typically wear a lot of makeup, that's totally cool too! Embrace your clean and fresh face, and let your natural beauty take center stage. Just a touch of powder to reduce shine right before the session can give you that polished touch without feeling overdone.
The key here is to be true to yourself and wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Whether it's a full face of makeup or a simple touch-up, we want you to feel amazing during your session. So, go ahead and rock your preferred style, because you're beautiful inside and out, no matter what!

Remember, the goal is to create beautiful, timeless images that reflect your family's unique bond. Use this guide as a starting point, but feel free to infuse your own personal style and creativity. The most important thing is to be yourselves and have fun during the photoshoot!
If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help you make your family photoshoot a memorable and enjoyable experience.

-
What time of day do you prefer to schedule sessions?I prefer to schedule my sessions as close to sunset as possible. This is when we will capture the best lighting and achieve those 'glowing' photographs.
-
Will we get the print release for the photos?Yes! Upon receiving your final images, you will also get a full print release.
-
Will my photos be posted publicly on your site or social media?I respect your privacy and allow each client to decide whether or not they want their photos displayed publicly. I'd love to show off you & your images!
-
Will you Photoshop my images to hide any unwanted spots, wrinkles, etc?Absolutely! Unless requested, I will only edit unavoidable distractions (blemishes, scratches, bruises). My rule of thumb is if it will be gone in 2 weeks, it will be edited out. If you want something photoshopped that could have been avoided (the color of your socks, your shirt, wrinkles in clothes etc) there will be an image fee for editing these changes, so please take that into consideration when putting together your outfits.
-
Do I have to order prints through you?I highly recommend ordering prints through my professional lab, but it is not required. The difference in quality is huge when it comes to ordering through a professional lab, but you will have full print rights.
-
What happens if I'm sick or it rains? If for some reason you cannot make your scheduled session time, due to sickness or mother nature, I will gladly reschedule your session to the next available date that works for both of our schedules. If another date is not scheduled and you cancel your session completely, your retainer fee is forfeited.
-
Are our furry family members welcome?YES!!! Your pets are part of your family, if you want them included, just let me know ahead of time, so we can prepare a plan to keep them safe when they are not in the photo and plan a location accordingly.
-
Am I allowed to share my images on Facebook?Absolutely! Once I deliver your FINAL images to you, please share them all you like! If I share some images on my professional page, you are also allowed to share that post, In fact I would appreciate it so much! However, please do not share your initial gallery I’ve sent you before the final editing process has been done.
-
Do you travel outside of the Comox Valley?Yes! I do charge a travel fee for anywhere outside of the Comox Valley area (Black Creek - Bowser) based off of Google Maps.
-
How quickly will we receive our photos?I know you will be excited to see the finished photos! I will do my absolute best to make it happen quickly. Please expect 1-2 weeks before you have access to your initial proofing gallery for choosing your favorites. After your choices are made, expect an additional 2-3 weeks for delivery. Usually this is much quicker, depending on the season.
-
Do you take any traditional posed shoots?Yes, I will spend some time taking some relaxed portraits of you together as a family, as this can be an important record for you (and it makes great Christmas gifts to the grand-parents). I will also spend time letting the action happen naturally and capturing the moments as they unfold.
-
How do you describe your photography style?I try to keep my family photography very natural, capturing the action as it happens. I generally pick a few cute spots, "arrange" you in them and then lead you to interact in ways that bring out natural expressions and connections. I feel this will bring out the true character of your children and will also make the session more enjoyable."
Thank you for considering me as your family photographer! I truly appreciate the opportunity to capture your special moments.
I hope this guide has provided you with valuable information and insights into what to expect during our session. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me. I'm here to assist you in any way I can.
I can't wait to hear from you and potentially work together to create beautiful and lasting memories for your family. Thank you again for considering me, and I hope to have the chance to capture your unique story soon!
